Judi May was born and educated in Alberta, and began teaching in British Columbia in 1972 after completing a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. After a successful teaching career, she continued with her interests in art and began pursuing the fascination of becoming a silversmith in 2000.
Artistic experience, a passion for design and the creative medium of silver are combined to reveal Judi May's distinctive approach to jewellery making. Working with silver, semi-precious stones, antique and hand-blown beads, Judi produces unusual and original eye-catching, wearable-art pieces, with beautiful inventive results with aesthetic appeal.
Based in Victoria, Judi's jewellery and abstract paintings are inspired by the infinite textures, patterns and colors of the surrounding Vancouver Island forests and beaches, and forever by her memories of the orchards and landscapes of the Okanagan Valley.
Over the years, Judi has regularly participated in many art shows and markets in Victoria, including the Moss Street Paint-In, the Royal Roads Annual Paint-In; and in Calgary, Alberta, the annual Crafters Christmas Market at the Telus Convention Centre.
Her work can be viewed at the following locations:
- Victoria Art Gallery
- Side Street Studio
- Government Street Market on Sundays (seasonal)
- Numerous local arts and crafts exhibitions
- Visitors are welcome by appointment at her studio
