I took my first basket course in 1993 after I moved to Salt Spring. Over the years I have taken many basket courses from local and internationally renowned teachers. I work with willow, cedar, bark, and a wide variety of other plant materials. To be able to forage in the garden or on the roadsides and make something practical and sculptural with what I have found is enormously pleasing. The materials are gifts from nature and I strive to create something that reflects the beauty of nature. I also use unconventional materials such as kelp, electrical wire, and metals. Experimenting with different materials, techniques, shapes, and weaves appeals to me. I like the fact that new meaning is given to these materials and their inherent qualities aren’t compromised. My lamps are one of the items I make. Each lamp is distinct and unique. They are formed on a mesh frame and made with a wide variety of natural materials. I weave these materials with copper, brass, or stainless steel strips which may be patinated. I also use waxed linen, cane, or electrical wire for weaving. All the bases are handmade either from coloured steel or wood. My work can be found at Artcraft, Saltspring Island, BC, and at Crafthouse, Granville Island, Vancouver, BC.
